The author uses the Greek myth of Icarus as a metaphor for that internal spirit that drives extreme athletes to pursue adventures not unlike Icarus’s own flight close to the sun. The reader is presented with true stories of adventure, exciting drama, humor, and philosophy from along the Icarus path. The author’s personal life-adventures offer a timeline to introduce many extreme sports, along with stories, quotes, and photos from others who have pursued these paths. This 357 page book, with over 325 enlargeable photos, is divided into four Parts broken up into 25 Chapters. Part I, ‘Hills, Mountains, and Soaring Peaks’ includes chapters on ski racing, freestyle skiing, extreme skiing, helicopter skiing and more. Part II, ‘Lakes, Oceans, Wind, and Waves’ explores slalom water skiing, ocean sailing, surfing, and windsurfing in high winds and surf. Part III, ‘Long and Winding Roads’ contains tales of motorcycle adventures. Lastly, Part IV, ‘Flying Through Space’ contains stories of parachuting, hang-gliding, and cliff diving. The book closes with a philosophical exploration of the mental challenges and rewards of following the Icarus path.

This book is a home run with the bases loaded. If you love to ski, surf or any other high adventure sport, this book is for you. Filled with wonderful ski and surfing episodes from all over the world. It includes much about the history of skiing along with exciting stories about many of the great historical skiers of all time. It’s a winner!

Very enjoyable and entertaining book I could not wait to finish it once I started reading. The author describes all his extreme adventures in very dramatic details that make you feel that you are there with him experiencing the same fears and consequences of his actions. There are many great quotes that inspire the adventure seeker in all of us. Very inspiring to see someone getting to live such a rich and fullfiling life in every sense of the word. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful life story.
  • Time to Strap on Wings & Fly!

I’m a "dip my big toe in the water" before I try new things kind of person, and this book is the TOTAL opposite of that outlook on life, yet I found myself completely immersed and on the edge of my seat cheering for this guy as I read his stories; and all the other Icarus Spirits he met along the way. You don’t have to be a participant in any of these sports to fully appreciate the excitement, craziness, humor and stubbornness (we all possess). I love good stories and I love to be educated along the way. The author colorfully shares his and other's stories, yet educates us; whether it be geography, sport history, or a little technique to peak our interest. The abundant photos add wonderful visuals to each story and it was so cool to tap on them to get a full screen view. HIs writing feels like he is in the room with you telling you his tales “live”. I have already started rereading it again and I rarely ever do that after I finish a book, but this read is so much fun! It is like watching a really good movie and you want to watch it again to pick up details you may have missed the first time around. Makes me want to strap on some Icarus wings and go for it!

What a great read full of adventures told truly in “The Spirit of Icarus” so well written and humorous at times I was literally LOL while reading! Being of a similar mindset as the author and having some of the same interests (although not quite to his level of extreme) I could very much relate to the experiences and thoroughly enjoyed the book!
